Eef van Breen Indonesia Quartet
Jazz & Gamelan Stories
Is a gamelan-jazz formation founded in Jogja. It excists of trumpeter & singer Eef van Breen from belanda, bassplayer Indrawan Thjin from Jakarta, guitarist Gangeng Yudana from Solo and gamelan musician Sudaryanto from Jogja.
It derived from the project LELANA LUMANTAR AKSA which was created by Komunitas Gayam 16 and Eef van Breen in January 2025 in Jogja.
This new project; “Eef van Breen Indonesia Quartet plays jazz & gamelan stories” is the next step in this collaboration; exploring the boundaries of jazz and gamelan by using gamelan instruments within jazz harmonies.
Eef: “Jazz has been fused with many styles all over the world since it was born; Like Duke Ellington’s Far East Suite; mixing Arabic influences with jazz or Dizzy Gillespies Cu-bob; mixing Cuban salsa with Be-bop, or Miles Davis Jazzrock; mixing jazz with rock music.

This new Quartet mixes jazz with Gamelan music in this fusion tradition. The songs tell universal stories of mankind..about love, loss, laughter and pain. The quartet uses famous javanese melodies to give the listeners a comfortable seat in a musical vehicle that takes them improvising to the most far stretched adventures places.
With Gamelanmaster Sudaryanto, often heard in Jogja in collaboration with Gayam 16, Eef is searching for new musical area’s since January this year.

"Cinematic
At 8:30 PM WIB, the atmosphere on stage changed when Eef van Breen, a Dutch musician and composer, took over. Eef presented a different musical world. More cinematic, theatrical, and imaginative.
His playing on trumpet, valve trombone, and vocal elements created poetic layers of sound. With an approach drawn from his years of experience in theater, film, and the performing arts, Eef invited the audience into a more intimate space. The music was not only heard but also experienced as a story.
During the hour-long performance, Bandung felt as if transported to an Amsterdam theater stage, full of discoveries and surprises.
The music echoed in the hall, leaving a warm, contemplative impression that enriched the audience's experience."
