Journey through the eyes
A Gayam 16/Eef van Breen Production
A musical quest through time and space. From the eyes of a man looking in the mirror in belanda in the 21st century traveling to the eyes of a woman in Indonesia looking in the river in the 19th century. From the eyes of the tigers of Sumatra through burning Vulcano’s of Jawa, burning lovers, devestating wars and magical rituals, through Gamelan and Jazzmusic a new story is being told in a new way..

“The musical performance was an exploration of experimental music that combined the work of composer Eef van Breen (Netherlands) with the distinctive nuances of the gamelan music group Gayam16 (Yogyakarta) with musicians Sudaryanto, Welly Hendratmoko, Tredybombom and Gombloh, and guitarist Ganggeng Yudana (Solo). “The music presented the results of a journey together with musicians from various backgrounds. The audience was invited to feel a harmony that transcends boundaries, cultures, and languages. Through collaborative work, Eef and Gayam 16 tried to emphasize a fresh musical exploration with the sounds of gamelan, jazz, and foley”

Lelana Lumantar Aksa presents a unique experience for the audience, presenting harmony between modern and traditional music through a fresh and innovative experimental approach. By combining the strengths of all the musicians, putting their talents under intense pressure for several weeks to tell a new, evocative story with the sounds of gamelan, jazz, and foley. In the story, they travel through a mirror across time and space, from the Netherlands, to Sumatra and Java. On their journey, they encounter tigers, volcanoes, and wild jungle oceans.
The collaboration is expected to open up new perspectives on how cross-cultural music can synergize and create something inspiring.
For art, music, and culture lovers, the experimental musical collaboration was a deeply memorable moment.
The story..
Once I dreamed I looked in the mirror and saw my own eyes stare back at me,
my pupils dilated and began to dance, they danced to the past over land and over sea.
The pupils traveled through eyes of tigers over roaring volcanoes straight through high fountains of fire
Through wars, pain and shame they end up in the eyes of a Nyai who washed herself in the Sangai.
She looked into the water and saw her eyes stare back at her. Her pupils dilated and began to dance, they danced to the future straight through the fast-flowing water of the river.
Back in the mirror they look at me, still watery from the river, crying.

A new collaboration!
This collaborative program is the result of a journey of musicians with various backgrounds, united in the spirit of creating beauty, transcending boundaries, cultures and languages.

Komunitas Gayam 16 meets Eef van Breen

Putri Raharjo (photo left, with Eef) is the beating hart of a vibrant gamelan Community in the center of Jogjakarta; Komunitas Gayam 16.
Together with her partner Ryan, her brother Ari Wulu and many more die-hard Gayam members she creates a platform to charish and develope Gamelan in the spirit of her father the legendary Sapto Raharjo
The Gayam16 Community is an arts community that provides a platform for gamelan players and enthusiasts. Their activities include event production, event management, and gamelan courses/learning.
Gayam16 was born from the idea of Sapto Raharjo, who aimed to fulfill the wishes of gamelan lovers and players worldwide by organizing an annual gathering where they could exchange ideas and develop traditional culture. This gathering of gamelan enthusiasts and players materialized in an event called the Yogyakarta Gamelan Festival, which has become an annual activity of the Gayam16 community.
Since its establishment, Gayam16 has been open and independent. This community welcomes everyone from all social and economic backgrounds. Starting in 2002, Gayam16 began recruiting volunteers for the Yogyakarta Gamelan Festival. Over time, the community continued to grow and evolve freely and openly.
The people within this community feel comfortable with the values and spirit of togetherness, which are at the core of Gayam16. Every member feels a sense of ownership of the community because they come together with the same passion and vision—to develop traditional culture, especially gamelan, in the face of modernity.
For Gayam16 members, gamelan is a spirit. It is not just seen as a traditional musical instrument but as a force that brings people together. This proves that gamelan is a powerful medium for communication.
